New N.C. <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_2\">State athletics director<\/span> Debbie Yow addressed the        club, and as you might expect, it was a straight talk about where the        <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_3\" style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\">Wolfpack<\/span> is headed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">It also included some insight into the football        program, Olympic sports, agents, the marketing of N.C. State and even an        interesting comment about <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_4\">The News &amp; Observer<\/span>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">But the big news of the day? Well, Tuffy, of course.        Tuffy is the new Wolfpack mascot, a <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_5\">Tamaskan dog<\/span> bred to look like a wolf,        who delighted fans in the Thursday night win over Cincinnati.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cI\u2019ve never spent so much time talking about a dog,\u201d        Yow joked to the crowd of several hundred.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">State introduced a new dog at the opener against        Western Carolina, but that Tamaskan, which Yow said was a female, did not        work out. Yow said they found the current Tuffy from a private owner in        New Bern, who wants to stay anonymous. \u201cThey are thrilled that their dog,        the Tamaskan, is our Tamaskan,\u201d Yow said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">Yow said the school will create a <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_6\">Facebook<\/span> page for        Tuffy and possibly even electronic birthday wishes that, say, a        grandparent can order to send to a grandchild from the mascot.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cWe have some plans for Tuffy,\u201d Yow said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">On a more serious note, Yow \u2013 the sister of former        Wolfpack <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_7\" style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\">coach Kay Yow<\/span> and a native of Gibsonville &#8211; said the chance to return to her native state and work for new chancellor Randy Woodson led        her to Raleigh. A headhunter who had called her through the years called        one more time, and this time she shocked the headhunter by saying , Maybe.        In particular, she wanted to meet Woodson to see if there was a fit.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cI met Randy and he blew me away,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is        stable, he is talented and he is going to stay.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">On other issues:<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ Yow said N.C. <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_8\" style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\">State athletics<\/span> could no longer stand to be        last in the Sears Director Cup standings among ACC schools and last in        overall graduation rates.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cThey are going to be flipped,\u201d she said of those        numbers.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"> @ Yow said she had heard many Wolfpack        fans complaining about The News &amp; Observer but said, \u201cThe N&amp;O has        been fair to us.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ Yow raved about a recent Wall Street Journal article        praising the hiring potential of N.C. State graduates.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ Yow said she felt for <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_9\">North Carolina<\/span> and its football        troubles, saying, \u201cA rogue tutor can happen anyway. The other [staff        member] is different.\u201d UNC assistant coach John Blake resigned earlier        this season after questions about his connections to a <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_10\">California sports        agent<\/span>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_na0H8CJUvY4\/TJplTjaYKYI\/AAAAAAAAAWc\/1WqV0-pQAxs\/s1600\/tom_obrien.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_na0H8CJUvY4\/TJplTjaYKYI\/AAAAAAAAAWc\/1WqV0-pQAxs\/s200\/tom_obrien.jpg\" width=\"131\" \/><\/a>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ Yow said she is thrilled with State&#8217;s 3-0 start in football, but said Saturday&#8217;s game at Georgia Tech is a critical one. She said she was impressed by how coach Tom O&#8217;Brien commands the attention of his team during meetings. &#8220;As an AD, that&#8217;s the first sign of trouble, if the coach is speaking and they aren&#8217;t really on point.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">State has had four straight losing seasons, three under O&#8217;Brien. &#8220;I hope he turns it. He&#8217;s a good guy. I&#8217;d like to see him turn it,&#8221; Yow said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">Yow also said she wore a watch that celebrated Maryland&#8217;s 2001 ACC football title, and plans to continue to wear it until State wins the league (which it hasn&#8217;t done since 1979). &#8220;I&#8217;m going to wear it until that&#8217;s us and then it goes into the trash at that point,&#8221; she said<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ N.C. State has struggled in the non-revenue sports, a        point that hasn\u2019t been lost on Wolfpack fans. Yow praised new volleyball        coach Bryan Bunn, who was hired by <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_11\" style=\"border-bottom: 2px dotted rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer;\">Lee Fowler<\/span>, and women\u2019s soccer coach        Steve Springthorpe. But as for spring sports, she said, \u201cAll the spring        sports are on notice.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">She said State would look to address what the programs        need, and then, \u201cWe\u2019re going to expect a heightened level of        achievement.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ Yow spoke with fire about the issue with athletes and        the letter she sent to all the <span class=\"yshortcuts\" id=\"lw_1285185588_12\">registered agents<\/span> in North Carolina, saying        the school would pursue legal action if an agent cost her athletes        eligibility.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cThey have no right to do that, and they are going to        pay personally,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">@ In response to a fan\u2019s question about N.C. State\u2019s        marketing and sports information efforts, Yow spoke directly about        Annabelle Myers, the Wolfpack\u2019s long-time sports information director.        \u201cAnnabelle\u2019s really not as bad an SID as the message boards think she is,        but she does need some direction, and we\u2019re going to provide that for        her.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><i>(Quick aside &#8211; the Capital Sports Report has known Myers for years and finds her quite professional, helpful and responsible.)<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">As for marketing, she said, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have a        whole branding campaign.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1456025708MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">However, Yow said N.C.
