{"id":285,"date":"2010-09-30T11:45:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-30T18:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/capitalsports.us\/?p=285"},"modified":"2010-09-30T11:45:00","modified_gmt":"2010-09-30T18:45:00","slug":"new-revelations-make-uncs-davis-sound-like-hes-defending-his-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/capitalsportsnc.com\/?p=285","title":{"rendered":"New revelations make UNC&#8217;s Davis sound like he&#8217;s defending his job"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">North Carolina football coach Butch Davis is increa<span style=\"font-size: small;\">singly sounding like a coach defending his job, and he very well may be.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">On Wednesday, UNC athletics director Dick Baddour again defended Davis when he spoke to the Raleigh Sports Club, telling the audience of several hundred Davis had his support.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><br \/>But yet another revelation came out Thursday, with Yahoo! Sports detailing the financial ties between former UNC assistant John Blake and California agent Gary Wichard. Davis was on Taylor Zarzour\u2019s \u201cSports Drive\u201d show later Thursday, and Zarzour, to his credit, pushed the coach on the issue of whether he should have known about Blake\u2019s ties to Wichard and whether he should have known players like Marvin Austin were visiting agents.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;In the past we haven&#8217;t monitored where they&#8217;ve gone,\u201d Davis said. \u201cKids have said &#8216;I&#8217;m hanging around here, or I&#8217;m going with a particular player to his house,&#8217; so no one monitors,&#8221; Davis told Sports Drive. &#8220;But we have already implemented as measures to try to improve some of the things so that we do know.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">By Thursday afternoon, News &amp; Observer columnist Caulton Tudor had seen enough. Posting to the paper\u2019s website, Tudor wrote, \u201c<span style=\"color: black; line-height: 115%;\">Butch Davis should resign as North Carolina\u2019s football coach.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; line-height: 115%;\">All that led to a wild scene in Chapel Hill Thursday when Davis addressed the media, surrounded by reporters and photographers. Davis said he would not resign and again said he couldn&#8217;t know all that his coaches and players were doing. He told reporters he plans <\/span><\/span>&#8220;to be the head football coach here currently, and in the future,&#8221; according to The News &amp; Observer.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; line-height: 115%;\">All this couldn\u2019t come at a worse time for UNC, which is building an \u201cacademic excellence\u201d center in a Kenan Stadium endzone and trying to raise funds from alumni. The endless process involving the student honor council, the Secretary of State\u2019s office and the NCAA has only eroded fan patience with the program.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; line-height: 115%;\">About the only good news for UNC was that safety Da&#8217;Norris Searcy was cleared to play Thursday and will compete for the first time Saturday at home against East Carolina.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: black; line-height: 115%;\">Other than that, the news for Carolina is grim \u2013 and Davis\u2019 status increasingly tenuous.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina football coach Butch Davis is increasingly sounding like a coach defending his job, and he very well may be.
