\"davedoeren3\"<\/a>NC State football coach Dave Doeren says he’s proud of the way his team fought against Florida State but the team needs to make more plays in the fourth quarter against Clemson and beyond.<\/p>\n

“We move on to a really good Clemson team,” Doeren said. “They’ve had two tough losses against two great opponents and a senior class that is 21-2 at home, 21-5 as a senior class. A really impressive group of leaders at Clemson and a freshman quarterback that’s lighting it up against a defense that has a bunch of seniors and graduate students on it. It’s going to be a great challenge. It’s an awesome atmosphere, I’ve been told, to play in. For us to have to play in the top two teams in our league back to back, it’s going to be a great challenge for our football team this week. Look
\nforward to the opportunity.”<\/p>\n

Q. Going up against Clemson, you
\ncome off an emotional game against Florida
\nState. What did your team learn from that loss,
\nand being able to score 41 points against
\nFlorida State despite the loss, what did they
\ntake away from that heading into Clemson.<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> I believe we can beat
\nanybody, and that game showed. There were so
\nmany plays — even with the 41 points, our
\noffensive guys will tell you, we turned it over twice,
\nand one of them was in the red zone going in to
\nscore. We know that we can score on anybody.
\nWe have that confidence.
\nI think now we’ve had to deal with the
\ncrowd noise that we’re going to get at Clemson,
\nbut I think it was a confidence builder. Like I told
\nthe guys after the game, we’re way better than we
\nwere, but we’re not as good as we can be. So
\nwe’ve got to keep fighting and scratching to move
\nand close the gap that existed between us and
\nwhere we were last year.<\/p>\n

Q. When you look at that gap from last
\nyear to this year, what’s going on that you’re
\nhaving maybe some difficulty in closing that
\ngap? I mean, obviously, you had a 4-0 start,
\nbut against Florida State, what are some of the
\nthose things that you still need to address to
\nget to where you really want to be?<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN: <\/strong>We’re the third youngest
\nteam in college football. That’s the problem.
\nWe’re just young. We’re playing teams like
\nClemson with seniors and graduate students, and
\nfreshmen and sophomores on our side. We’re a
\nreally young football team. We’re playing hard.
\nWe’re playing with passion. We’re practicing hard.
\nWe just don’t have the experience or the years in
\nthe weight room that our competitors do in some
\nareas.
\nWe tell our guys, we’ve got to be great
\ntechnicians. We’ve got to play above our heads
\nfrom an effort standpoint to meet up with the two
\nand three differential on the teams we’re playing.
\nThat’s all it is. It’s just a youth thing. We’ve got 51
\nfreshmen and sophomores and 15 true freshmen
\nthat are playing. It’s a lot different than Florida
\nState and Clemson’s lineup.
\n
\nQ. What challenges does Watson pose
\nfor you this week? What’s going to be the
\nmessage to the pass rush or the pass defense
\nfor how to contain that Clemson passing
\ngame?<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> Similar to playing Florida
\nState, he’ll run. He’s one of the best spread
\nrunners in the country coming out. Right now he’s
\nthrowing the ball really well, one interception and
\nten touchdowns, I believe.
\nHis receivers are strong. They’ll go up and
\nget the football. They play with confidence. We’re
\ngoing to have to have tight coverage. We’re going
\nto have to be able to go up and play jump balls,
\nand our pass rush lanes and our pressures are
\ngoing to have to be disciplined.<\/p>\n

Q. I’m just moving away from the game
\non Saturday and just discuss a hot topic in
\nsports, in particular, football — concussions.
\nClearly, there were some mistakes made
\nthrough some miscommunications with
\nMichigan dealing with the head injury of the
\nquarterback, Shane Morris. What’s in place at
\nNC State that would prevent this from
\nhappening during the game?<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> Well, any time there’s an
\ninjury, whether it’s a head in
\njury or a bodily issue of the player, our training staff
\nwill take that student-athlete to our team physicians that are at
\nthe game. Once they have a diagnosis, they’ll
\nreport to me. Hey, Coach, he’s out, he’s
\nconcussed. Hey, Coach, he sprained his knee.
\nWe’re going to see if we can get him back. Hey,
\nCoach, he sprained his ankle. He’s going to be all
\nright. We’ll retape him.
\nThey give me the information, and I really
\nhave no say-so at that point. They’re just going to
\ntell me so I can get on the headphones with
\noffense, defense, and special teams coaches and
\nlet them know that so and so is out for a while or
\nso and so is out for the game.
\n
\nQ. I know after the Florida State game
\nyou mentioned that you guys really liked the
\nmatchup you had with Bo Hines. He’s played
\nreally well and had a really good start to the
\nseason. What kind of makes him so good? I
\nknow he took advantage of a guy who’s a
\nfreshman All-American in James Ramsey last
\nweek a little bit. Wonder what you guys have
\nseen to give you so much confidence in him.<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> Just watching the film,
\nwe felt like there were certain routes that that guy
\nstruggled against, and he’s really good. There’s no
\nquestion. He’s on an island the whole game,
\nplaying man to man. When you play in the slot, it’s
\nnot easy. Bo is such a good route runner with
\ngood timing, we felt there were things we could
\ntake advantage of. Sometimes we did, and
\nsometimes we didn’t. He won some, and we won
\nsome.
\nSome of the routes that Coach Canada
\ncame up with just worked against the leverage he
\nwas playing, and I think that’s the biggest thing.
\nWhen you’re man to man, you can’t play head up.
\nYou’re either inside or outside, just trying to take
\nadvantage of leverage.<\/p>\n

Q. With an offense like you guys, you
\nmentioned you guys have a lot of young guys,
\ncertainly the case especially with Bo. For him, I
\nthink he’s pulling in something like four or five
\ncatches a game. He’s among the ACC leaders
\nin just receptions. How impressive is that for a
\nfreshman to come in and be that reliable, be
\nthat kind of player?<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> It’s impressive. Bo
\ncame in early, so he was benefited from going
\nthrough spring ball with us, and I think that’s a big
\npart of why he’s playing so fast.
\nHe’s different. Just his dad was an NFL
\nplayer. He played in a great football program at
\nCharlotte Christian. He was well coached. He’s
\none of those guys that football is not hard for him
\nto learn. You say it once, and he gets it, and he
\nhas great effort when he plays.<\/p>\n

Q. Coach, maybe the most impressive
\nstat among the good ones that Jacoby Brissett
\nhas put up, 13 touchdowns and just one
\ninterception.<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN: Let’s knock on some
\nwood right there.<\/p>\n

Q. What does that say about his
\njudgment and that sort of thing?<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> I think Jacoby is
\nmanaging the game. We’ve really worked hard
\nwith him because he is so good, just trying to make
\nevery throw. If it’s not good and it’s not there, just
\nthrow it away and run. He’s been able to do that,
\nextend some drives and scrambles, and third and
\nseven, if everybody’s covered, run for eight. He’s
\nbeen able to do that.
\nAnd some quarterbacks will stand there
\nand stand there and stand there, throw it away or
\nget hit late and fumble, which happened to him a
\ncouple of times in the game. He’s really smart. He
\nlearns from his mistakes. He has a great
\nunderstanding of what Coach Canada wants him
\nto do from a timing standpoint.
\nJust got to keep working it and keep
\nworking it because we saw a great pass rush last
\nweek. He threw the ball extremely well and
\nprobably held it too long one time. This week he’s
\ngoing to see maybe even a better pass rush with
\n(Vic) Beasley.<\/p>\n

Q. His poise seems to be one of the
\nbest things about him too.<\/em>
\nDAVE DOEREN:<\/strong> He’s super competitive.
\nHe loves the spotlight — not the look at me part of
\nit, but the competition part of it. He just loves
\ncompeting and being on that stage and seeing if
