North Carolina wins a wild one in 13 innings to advance

North Carolina advances. Up by four runs in the ninth, No. 1 UNC looked to be easily headed to the NCAA super regional. But there was still a lot of baseball, wild baseball to play.

Florida Atlantic came up with six runs, including a two-out grand slam, in the ninth to take an 8-6 lead. The Tar Heels tied it in the bottom of the ninth. A three-run homer by FAU put the visitors up 11-8 in the 12th. But the Tar Heels scratched across three in the bottom of the 12th to tie it at 11. A play at the plate kept the Heels from winning it then.

Florida Atlantic stranded a runner at third in the top of the 13th. After a controversial out call at first where replays showed the Tar Heel was safe to start the bottom of the 13th, a single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases.

UNC’s Cody Stubbs singled off the left field chalk to score Landon Lassiter with the winning run and a 12-11 victory that sends the Heels into the super regional against South Carolina.

“All these guys care about is winning and they found a way to get it done,” said UNC pitching coach Scott Forbes.

The win came barely a week after North Carolina needed 18 innings to beat rival North Carolina State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. On this night, the Tar Heels used six pitchers — including regional-game starters Kent Emanuel, Benton Moss and Hobbs Johnson — before reliever Reilly Hovis (4-0) earned the win by striking out Rocklein to end the top of the 13th.

The Tar Heels, 55-9, started the year 39-2 and won the ACC tournament title, but barely avoided suffering consecutive losses for the first time all season. Florida Atlantic edged North Carolina 3-2 on Sunday to force Monday night’s decisive game.

Reliever Michael Sylvestri (4-3) took the loss after allowing three hits and the winning run in 1 1/3 innings.

The game was delayed for two hours due to heavy rain and didn’t wrap up until after 1 a.m. Tuesday.

No. 1 Tar Heels upset; face elimination Monday

uncbaseballNo. 1 North Carolina led 2-0 in the seventh and starter Hobbs Johnson was pitching a no hitter. A few batters later, Florida Atlantic took a 3-2 lead on a Ricky Santiago three-run home run off reliever Tervor Kelly. It was the first hit of the game for the Owls, who had only three hits.

The Tar Heels, meanwhile, stranded 16 runners on the night.

The two teams play Monday night at 6 p.m. for the sub-regional championship.

“Well, the good news is we get to play again tomorrow night,” head coach Mike Fox said. “We’re going to focus on that and try to put this one behind us as quickly as we can, and be ready to play tomorrow night.”

Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the first inning behind three straight singles by Chaz Frank, Landon Lassiter and Colin Moran. The Tar Heels would strand Lassiter and Moran in the first but would continue to threaten against FAU starter Bo Logan.

The Tar Heels stranded a pair of runners in the second and two more in the third before pushing across another run in the fifth. Skye Bolt opened the frame with a double and moved to third base on a single off the bat of Cody Stubbs. Michael Russell lifted a fly ball to shallow center field but Bolt was able to beat throw and put the Tar Heels up 2-0.

Johnson walked the first batter he faced to open the seventh inning and was relieved by Kelley after walking five batters over six-plus innings of no-hit work. Kelley walked the first man he faced but retired the next batter via strikeout. Santiago then hit a 1-1 pitch to left field that cleared the wall for his fifth home run of the year.

Skye Bolt nearly put the Tar Heels in front with two outs in the top of the eighth inning after Colin Moran drew a two-out walk. Bolt lifted a pitch to deep right center field but the right fielder made the catch a step in front of the wall to end the inning.

The Tar Heels were unable to get anything going in the ninth inning as FAU claimed the 3-2 win.

Chaz Frank paced the Tar Heels at the plate with a 4-for-5 effort, while Cody Stubbs and Brian Holberton chipped in two hits apiece.

Senior right-hander Chris Munnelly will take the bump for the Tar Heels Monday night and will likely face FAU right-hander Jeremy Strawn.

Senay drives in five as Pack wins sub-regional

TarranSenayNC State senior Tarran Senay drove in five runs, including three on a home run blast, to lead the Wolfpack by William & Mary 9-2 to win the NCAA sub-regional championship.

The Pack put up three runs in the first, 6th and 8th innings to cruise to the regional-clinching victory.

In three games this weekend, NC State allowed just three runs, the fewest the Pack has ever allowed in 26 NCAA Regional appearances. Sunday’s win was the Wolfpack’s 47th of the season, which ranks as the fourth most in school history. State will need to advance to Omaha to match the program record of 49, set in 1993.

For the second year in a row, Senay had a homer and five RBIs in the title game, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored. All-Region performer Jake Fincher went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI to improve to 59-for-61 on reaching base at least once in games this season. Logan Ratledge went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for his second three-hit outing against the Tribe to make the All-Region team at second base. Trea Turner, Grant Clyde, and Carlos Rodon joined Senay, Fincher, and Ratledge on the All-Region team.

Wolfpack starter Brad Stone (3-2) secured the win with 5 1/3 shutout innings, holding the Tribe to four hits while striking out three. Ryan Wilkins worked the next two innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. Grant Sasser claimed his eighth save of the year with a perfect 1 2/3 innings to slam the door.

NC State’s pitching staff did not allow a walk for the second game in a row. Over the weekend, Pack pitchers struck out 25 batters while issuing just two walks.

William & Mary starter Matt Wainman (4-4) took the loss on 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits. Reliever John Sheehan pitched the final 2 2/3, surrendering three earned on four hits.

The Wolfpack took charge early as Turner and Fincher led off the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back singles to center field. After a fielder’s choice by Brett Austin put runners on the corners, Senay crushed his three-run homer over the right field wall to give the Pack an early 3-0 lead. The home run was his eighth of the season and second of the regional.

Both teams went scoreless for the next four and a half innings, before NC State manufactured three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bryan Adametz and Matt Bergquist hit back-to-back singles with one out to put runners on the corners, before second baseman Logan Ratledge reached on a perfectly executed safety squeeze down the first base line.

With runners on first and second, Fincher legged out an infield single to third base, scoring Bergquist and a hustling Ratledge after an interference ruling on the Tribe’s pitcher, who blocked the third base line to give the Wolfpack a 6-0 advantage.

The Tribe would cut the deficit to five in the top of the seventh on a pair of back-to-back doubles with one out. In the eighth, three Wolfpack fielding errors extended the inning to allow Ryan Brown to score when Ryan Lindemuth reached on a fielder’s choice.

State stretched the lead to 9-2 in the bottom half, started by Ratledge’s two-out double down the left field line and into the visiting bullpen. An intentional walk put Turner aboard, and a double steal put both runners in scoring position. Fincher reached on a dropped third strike to score Ratledge and push Turner to third, then advanced to second on another wild pitch. Austin walked to load the bases, setting up Senay’s two-RBI single to left center.

NC State returns to action next weekend for the Super Regionals against the winner of the Eugene Regional.

NC State (46-14) set a single-season wins record under the direction of head coach Elliott Avent with victory No. 46 on Saturday. Now in his 17th season at the helm of the Wolfpack, his previous best season was 45-18 in 2003.

Green Hope girls cap perfect season with 4-A title

greenhopeCary Green Hope capped a perfect season and blanked Cornelius W.A. Hough 2-0 on Saturday afternoon to win the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A women’s soccer championship before a large crowd at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University.

Green Hope avenged a loss in last year’s final, as it was a rematch of last year’s state 4-A title match in which Sarah Moon scored two goals in the final 11 minutes to lift Hough to a 2-1 victory over Green Hope.

Senior forward Alexis Shaffer, who scored the initial goal of the game and had an excellent all-around performance, was named the championship Most Valuable Player.

Green Hope took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute when Shaffer took the ball down the right side, wheeled back to the left and fired a left-footed shot into the back of the net for her 39th goal of the season. The Falcons had the better of play for most of the first half.

Senior keeper Lisa Armstrong recorded the shutout in goal, with seven saves.

Green Hope completed a perfect 28-0 season and has not lost since its defeat in last year’s state championship game. Hough finished the year 21-3 overall and had a seven-match win streak snapped.
