Redskins cut ECU’s Smith after failing to protect RG3

Former ECU offensive lineman Willie Smith has been cut by the Washington Redskins as the Skins work to get its roster down to 53. Smith perhaps sealed his fate when he failed to project Robert Griffin III during a preseason game against the Lions.

Griffin was hit numerous times in the backfield during the game and suffered a concussion that threatens to bench the QB for part of the season.

The Redskins starting tackle Trent Williams has been nursing a hurt foot and Coach Jay Gruden had expressed confidence that Smith could fill in adequately for Williams. Of course that was before the Lions game debacle.
