Hard time for Panthers, Redskins fans in NC

The two pro football teams with traditional fan bases in North Carolina aren’t giving fans much of a reason to watch these days. The Redskins went back to Rex Grossman at quarterback today, and despite a decent passing effort, the Skins failed to even score a touchdown and fell at Miami 20-9. Meanwhile, it may have been an even worse day in Charlotte as the Panthers fell to Tennessee 30-3.

The Panthers, now 2-7, had looked pretty good in some losses earlier in the year and in a win at home against the Redskins. But this game made the Panthers look like last year’s inept team. QB Cam Newton was 23 of 40 for 212 yards, with an interception but everyone believes he will be the quarterback next year. So, there is no need to try to enter the Andrew Luck quarterback sweepstakes by having the league’s worst record.

The Redskins however, now 3-6, do need a quarterback as neither Grossman nor John Beck have worked out. The Skins, who play surging Dallas next week, have a tough schedule the rest of the way and could end up 3-13 or 4-12. If they win enough that they don’t get the No. 1 draft pick, you can bet the Skins will try to swing a trade to get Luck.

Injuries have decimated the Redskins season. The embarrassing loss by the Panthers is a little harder to figure.

Most analysts thought that the Panthers 2-6 start would turn around in the second half of the season because of the close losses they had to good teams. The Titans are an average team that was playing on the road.

The best and worst of Panthers loss and Redskins win

Carolina Panthers’ QB Cam Newton looked good at first but he faltered and his team fell while Washington Redskins’ QB Rex Grossman looked bad at first but he led the Skins to a TD and field goal in the last five minutes as his team won.

Newton threw for more than 400 yards again but he threw three crucial interceptions in a 30-23 loss to Green Bay. Grossman threw interceptions on the Redskins first two possessions, including one inside the opponents’ five-yard-line, but came back with a touchdown strike to Santana Moss on fourth and three and led the team down the field in the last couple of minutes for a winning field goal as the Skins beat the Cardinals 22-21.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post gave his best and worst of the Redskins game while Joseph Person of the Raleigh News & Observer graded out the Panthers game.

Predictions: Packers to pick apart Panthers while Skins handle Cardinals

It’s kind of a shame that the Panthers couldn’t build on last week’s offensive explosion with an easier opponent this week. The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers come to town and are just too good for the Panthers, with or without Cam Newton. The Pack handles the Panthers 38-17.

Meanwhile the Redskins looked solid against the Giants last week and they face the Panthers’ Week 1 opponent in Arizona. The Skins are excited about their start to the season and they should be able to build on the momentum by a score of 27-16.

Last week, I started the season at 2-0 with a win by the Redskins and a loss by the Panthers.

Newton doesn’t win but he may have won over some critics

Ok his team didn’t win but Cam Newton certainly made his mark in Fantasy Football leagues with accounting for three touchdowns and throwing for more than 400 yards in his debut Sunday in a 28-21 loss at Arizona.

Newton is quickly making believers of some skeptics. The Carolina Panthers opener was probably one of the two or three most exciting games of the day Sunday. That couldn’t have been said of any week last season.

But being exciting and entertaining won’t in and of itself lead to victories. I, for one, rather have a solid ball control team that goes 9-7 than an exciting and entertaining team that goes 7-9. Maybe I’m old school.

Newton, who set a rookie quarterback mark, certainly looked better than in the preseason when he hit on only 40 percent of his passes. In the first regular season game he was an amazing 24 of 37 for 422 yards. Yes, receivers were getting open but he still had to deliver it, and he did.

“He was everything everybody didn’t expect him to be,” said receiver Steve Smith, who caught eight passes, two of which went for touchdowns. “He was on point, he made some great runs, he made some great reads, made some fantastic throws. He made some throws out there that honestly as a receiver it made it easy to catch them.”

Before the NFL draft, Pro Football Weekly pointed out Newton’s negatives:

“Played in a simplified, run-first, dive-option read offense with very basic high-low reads. Worked exclusively out of the gun and was very quick to run at the first flash of coverage. Limited field vision — does not process the passing game. Inconsistent throwing mechanics with a flick delivery — generates all of his power from his upper-body strength and too often arms the ball. Streaky passer with spotty accuracy. Makes his receivers work hard and throws into coverage. Does not spin a tight spiral. Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and always will struggle to win a locker room. Only a one-year producer. Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable.”

Despite his personal success Sunday, whether it will continue and whether it will translate into victories is still in question.

Predictions: Panthers to fall in Arizona while Redskins upset Giants

The Carolina Panthers will be better than last year and they have defeated the Cardinals all four times they’ve played them in Arizona. So, why won’t they win Sunday?

Well, the Cardinals’ offensive line should dominate the Panthers’ defensive line and the Cardinals’ defensive line should dominate the Panther’s offensive line. In addition, Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald is a game changer unlike anyone on the Panthers’ team. Let’s say Cardinals 31, Panthers 17.

As for the Redskins, they have looked good in the preseason (even with Rex Grossman at quarterback) and the Giants are beat up (especially defensively). The Redskins defensive line is better than last year and should do a better job containing New York’s running game than the Skins have done in recent years.

As for intangibles, Gen. Colin Powell is serving as the Redskins’ honorary captain on 9/11 in the nation’s capital, and family members who lost loved ones in the attacks will be honored in a pregame ceremony. How about Redskins 27, Giants 17.

Tar Heels cut by Panthers, Redskins but Garner’s Banks makes it

Former UNC cornerback Kendric Burney was cut by the Carolina Panthers while former UNC runningback Shaun Draughn was cut by the Washington Redskins as teams get their rosters down to 53.

Brandon Banks of Garner did, however, make the Redskins’ roster after a 95-yard punt return in the final preseason game Thursday. Speculation was that Banks might get cut because of a rule change that helps kickers boot it through the end zone and minimizes the importance of special teams players. Banks is listed as a receiver but will probably do little of that with his value being as a kick and punt returner.

Other cuts include former UNC offensive lineman Mike Ingersoll (Kansas City), third-year pro out of UNC Brandon Tate (New England) and rookie lineman Kyle Jolly (Steelers).

Each of the players who were cut still have an opportunity to either be picked up by another team or making the eight-player practice squad. Those players don’t dress for games and don’t travel for road games.
There were no real surprises among the Panthers’ cuts but there were a few among the Redskins players including offensive tackle Artis Hicks, defensive lineman Anthony Bryant and safety Chris Horton.

What the Panthers’ fans can learn about hope and change

Sports reporters are already saying rookie QB Cam Newton is a fan favorite among the Carolina Panthers faithful. One even wrote, “Cam Newton brings hope—and that is all Panther fans want after witnessing last season.”

Where have I heard that term “hope and change?” How is that working out for ya? Panthers’ fans should learn from American politics that you can’t base your future on hope and change.

I’m not saying Newton isn’t an athletic, exciting player but it seems that fans are buying into all the hype and celebrity. If you’ve read my stuff before you know that I’m not keen on our country’s obsession with celebrity.

Results are what fans should want and it’s too early to know what’s going to happen. It used to be that you earned your way onto a team and worked your way up. Everything is in fast motion these days – partly because of information overload and the addiction for more information. In years gone by, people were patient to see how things would shake out and were more loyal to the older players, even if they are still developing themselves.

But today’s hope and change illusion gives us Cam Newton – a guy who needs a lot of seasoning and personal maturity. I suppose if he starts from game one of the regular season that the Panthers’ progress will be interesting. But if I were coach, I’d start Jimmy Clausen, also highly touted out of college, until Newton is a little more mature. Some humility will help him. However, on the other hand, he’s such a hot dog and so cocksure that a few fumbles or interceptions here or there probably won’t affect him.

Clausen didn’t help his cause with an unforced interception in the first two minutes of the first preseason game – which led some overly excitable fans to start the chant “Cam, Cam, Cam.” Be careful what you ask for – you might get hope and change… and little else.

Panthers issue update and it doesn’t look good for Gettis

David Gettis, Panthers receiver, apparently has torn an ACL and may be out for the season.

The Panthers issued an update through an interview with head coach Ron Rivera who said they’ll know more in a week once the swelling is gone.

Gettis ranked second on the Panthers with 508 yards receiving on 37 catches as a rookie last season. Rivera said, “It’s disappointing because the young man really showed. He had a good last few days. He’s got a bright future. Whatever it entails, he’ll get it right and we’ll have him ready to go when he’s ready.”

On how the injury occurred: “It was down in the red zone. He was releasing and he got jammed, and his foot caught and slipped in a bad direction. So it was disappointing. The young man, like I said, was having a really good camp.”

On how many wide receivers and tight ends might make the final roster: “A good number. We have some players that all deserve that opportunity so we’re going to have to wait and see. The biggest thing we’ve got to look at, obviously, is how that total number impacts the other positions. But we’ve got a good number of tight ends that can help us. We’ve got a couple of young guys that we want to think about trying to keep around and the same thing at wide receiver. A lot of it depends on what comes out with David (Gettis) today as well, and then we’ll see from there.”

The Panthers open the preseason at home Saturday night against the Giants. The Redskins, the Panthers’ rival for the hearts and minds of Triangle football fans according to various studies, open the preseason at home tonight against Pittsburgh.
