Tar Heels cruise after breaking open game with GT

An 11-0 run at the end of the first half broke open a tight game and North Carolina cruised to a 75-59 win at home to break a four-game losing streak. (12/10)

Up just 28-26 with just over three minutes to go in the first half, the Tar Heels got a jolt from freshman Seth Trimble off the bench as he hit a pair of free throws and dished out three assists during the stretch, including a slick pass to R.J. Davis for a layup and a 39-26 halftime lead.

“Those last three minutes of the first half was the first time I felt like it looked like Carolina basketball,” UNC coach Hubert Davis said, pointing to strong defensive play, running the offense and making the extra pass.

The Tar Heels’ lead fluctuated between 13-16 points most of the second half with the advantage swelling to 20 late in the game.

Davis and Armando Bacot, returning after sitting out the previous game with a sore shoulder, led the way for the Tar Heels as both accomplished double-doubles. It was Davis’ first of the season as he scored 22 points and hauled in his 10th rebound in the last minute.

“R.J. was getting in the painst and being physical,” Coach Davis said. “That type of activity really helps up.”

Meanwhile, it was Bacot’s 54th career double-double as he scored 21 points and finished with 13 rebounds.

“Armando did a great job running down the middle of the floor and posting up,” Coach Davis said. “We were able to get him the ball and it allowed us to be efficient, especially in transition.”

The Tar Heels also limited the Yellow Jackets to just one offensive rebound – this from a Georgia Tech team that normally wins the offensive rebounding stat. The Heels held the Jackets to 22 points in the paint after giving up 92 points in the paint in the previous two games.

In addition to Davis and Bacot, Pete Nance and Caleb Love scored in double figures for the Tar Heels with 11 and 10 points respectively

Georgia Tech falls to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

Carolina, 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference, hosts the Citadel Tuesday night.
