UNC freshman leads women’s soccer into ACC tourney

North Carolina forward Megan Buckingham received the nod as ACC Freshman of the Year as voted upon by the ACC’s 14 head coaches for women’s soccer and announced on Thursday.

Buckingham is the sixth Tar Heel to be voted ACC Freshman of the Year and the first since Lindsay Tarpley in 2002. The Novi, Michigan, native has appeared in all 16 of UNC’s matches with 14 starts. She is tied for the team lead in goals with four and ranks fifth in total points scored with eight. Two of her goals were game-winners, helping nationally fifth-ranked UNC (12-2-2, 9-0-1) to a share of the ACC regular-season crown.

The 2014 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship opens Friday, Nov. 7 at the UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium with a pair of semifinal matches. No. 1 seed Florida State will play No. 4 seed Notre Dame in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m., while No. 2 seed North Carolina and No. 3 seed Virginia will meet in the second semifinal at 8 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN3. Sunday’s Championship match will kick off shortly after 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
